Video Description

In this video, we take a look at the Dornier Do 215, an early World War II bomber, night fighter, and reconnaissance aircraft made by Germany. We first talk about aircraft names and designations, and try to determine when a new design should and does receive a new name. We then go into the Dornier Do 17 "Flying Pencil", an iconic early war do-it-all design. We talk about its incredibly impressive performance in testing, and how it became a highly sought after export plane. We then talk about those export planes and how the evolution of the Do 17 led to further interest in exports. We talk about how the Do 17Z and its performance led to the Do 215. We talk about how the Do 215 was, initially, exactly the same as the Do 17Z, and how it evolved to be slightly different and better. We talk about its performance for the Luftwaffe, its evolution into a night fighter, and its eventual removal from service. We end by speculating on the purpose of giving the Do 215 its own separate designation.
