December 13, 2025 marks 24 years of the cowardly attack on the Indian Parliament. It's moment to pay homage to the 9 Indians who sacrificed their lives to save the top political leadership of the country. It showed that nurturing democracy and protecting our freedom requires a sustained ongoing effort. But it's also a day to pause and remember the brave BSF personnel who tracked down and killed Jaish-e-Mohammad commander Ghazi Baba in Srinagar, on August 30, 2003. The man who led that operation, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF, Narendra Nath Dhar Dubey, in a detailed interview with Jist News Director Rahul Shrivastava, revealed how the BSF managed to neutralise the Pakistani terrorist. On August 27-28, 2003, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was visiting Srinagar. BSF was in-charge of ensuring security for the Prime Minister's visit. Mr Dubey says the BSF had occupied the route from the Srinagar Airport to the Convention Centre in the city five days in advance. Despite lane-by-lane security presence, two terror incidents occurred. First, a terrorist hiding inside an empty bus at the Batmaloo bus stand opened fire on security forces and fled. Second, a suicide attack took place at the Greenways Hotel in Lal Chowk. In a night-long operation, four to five terrorists were killed. Security forces too suffered losses including injury to DIG Deshraj. On August 28, 2003, Prime Minister Vajpayee concluded his visit to Srinagar. On the same day, the BSF landed a big terror catch. A man was seen walking suspiciously with a bicycle through a Srinagar street. He was checked by the security forces and overpowered. The man BSF had caught was JeM terrorist Ansar Bhai, the deputy of Ghazi Baba. At the time Ansar Bhai was caught, he was carrying an AK-47 in a bag hanging from his bicycle's handle. He was also carrying grenades besides a pistol and a walkie-talkie hidden under his trousers. It became clear that Ansar Bhai was on a suicide mission because he was wearing a belt loaded with RDX. Ansar Bhai's interrogation led the BSF to unearth a huge cache of arms from a secret chamber in the house he used as a hideout. But even Ansar Bhai didn't know the exact location where Ghazi Baba was operating from. The owner of the house, which Ansar Bhai used as a hideout, was questioned and that led BSF to call in the carpenter who had designed and built secret chambers to store weapons in two houses. The second hideout was in the vicinity of the Cement Bridge in Srinagar. BSF recced the area and narrowed down on Ghazi Baba's location. In the early hours of August 30, 2003, a BSF team led by Narendra Nath Dhar Dubey laid a cordon and barged inside the house. They met no resistance on the ground floor. But on the second floor, lights had been suddenly switched on and switched off. As the BSF team reached the second floor, they walked into what seemed like an empty room. But they found what the carpenter had revealed - a wall mirror with a drawer at the bottom. The BSF men fired on the mirror and immediately they faced a burst of Kalashnikov firing and grenades. Constable Balbir Singh was hit with a fatal bullet and he collapsed. A terrorist later identified as Rashid Bhai, jumped out of the pantry and was taken down by the BSF personnel in the cordon. The action on the second floor was swift and deadly. The man behind the mirror wall also collapsed. He was Ghazi Baba. BSF personnel too suffered injuries in this encounter. Mr Dubey was grievously injured having been hit by at least seven bullets. Two of his colleagues were also rushed to hospital. It was indeed a big catch. On September 22, 2003, at the 31st annual Training Conference of the Border Security Force, then Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani lauded the BSF for "tracking down and eliminating Ghazi Baba, the mastermind behind the attack on the Indian Parliament".
