Although Herman Melville is now regarded as one of America’s most important writers, in his lifetime, after early success with his South Seas travel books, his work received mostly negative reviews from the critics and he was largely ignored by the buying public. His greatest works were written in bursts of feverish activity but as he got older he went into prolonged slumps of dark depression, writing little and drifting quietly into obscurity. This biographical documentary explores the colourful, but tragic life of one of the world’s most celebrated writers – a man whose literary achievements were unappreciated, forcing him to spend 19 years grafting away as a lowly customs inspector instead of writing, a man plagued by frustration and illness, but a man who was able to use his experiences to reveal unprecedented insights into the darker recesses of the human soul.
