In this video, I do pure hangar math on the modern price paradox, how a “basic” Cessna 172 Skyhawk (a design lineage that traces back to the 1950s) can sit deep in the $400k–$500k range, while a fully optioned Cessna Turbo Skylane (T182T / Turbo 182) can flirt with seven figures once the dealer, tax, insurance, and financing reality hits. Meanwhile, two-seat composites like the VL3 and TL Sparker show up wearing supercar price tags, and the used market still offers heavy hitters like the Cirrus SR22 and Diamond DA40 that make the “new airplane” value proposition look weird on paper. And that’s where the Turbo 182 becomes the poster child, because the spreadsheet exposes the brutal truth: full-fuel payload. With 87 gallons usable, you’re hauling a big chunk of weight as fuel before you even load people and bags. So the million-dollar “four-seater” starts behaving like a 2–3 person airplane unless you play fuel-tetris and give up range from the start. Then we put it next to the Sling High Wing with the Rotax 915 iS, and the experimental world quietly embarrasses the certified world on full-fuel payload and fuel efficiency, while living in the same 135–145 KTAS neighborhood in normal cruise. That’s the uncomfortable point: a modern kit/experimental ecosystem can deliver more usable travel for less money… but banks, insurers, and conservative buyers keep paying the certified tax for the comfort of familiarity. We also go upstream, because this isn’t “just inflation.” It’s the combined gravity of FAA certification (think Part 23), compliance, testing, product support, and the liability hangover that reshaped GA economics (including the legacy of U.S. product-liability culture and reforms like the General Aviation Revitalization Act (GARA)). Add insurance underwriting, financing reality, shrinking pilot populations, and the fact that 50-year-old Cessnas still compete directly with new production, and you get the self-feeding loop: low volume → high unit cost → higher prices → even lower volume. That loop is why new-airplane economics break when you’re building hundreds instead of thousands, whether the badge says Cessna (Textron Aviation), Cirrus Aircraft, Diamond Aircraft, or a rising experimental player with Garmin glass and modern engines.
