In the heart of Valletta, Malta, a small shop called Hollywood has been quietly watching the city change for over 200 years. For the last few years, Thomas Camilleri has been bringing it back to life, with a new vision. Once a British servicemen’s bar, later a neighbourhood staple, Hollywood is one of Valletta’s most recognisable shopfronts. Today, it has been carefully restored by its current owner, who set out to create something that sits between a souvenir shop and an art gallery. A place that feels open, human, and deeply Maltese. In this first episode of a new series we're calling 'SHOPS', we step inside Hollywood to explore the story behind the renovation. From salvaged marble floors and rescued shop signs to modular shelving inspired by old Maltese homes, every decision was guided by respect for what came before. The space is now filled with work by Maltese artists and craftsmen, from hand printed photography and original illustrations to jewellery, typography, and unique objects made in small batches. This is a story about saying yes. Yes to restoring old spaces. Yes to collaboration. Yes to preserving local culture in a city that is rapidly changing. It is also a story about Valletta residents, passing memories, and a shop that remains a shop, not a bar.
