In reality, the role of a jester is one that has been independently derived numerous times in different eras and places throughout history. To a scholar, this suggests some kind of fundamental need for fools in human society, but what could that need be? A jester serves a wide variety of roles in human societies, but at their core, they are sources of chaos. A jester doesn't adhere to social norms or propriety. A jester doesn't shy away from speaking their mind freely. A jester doesn't worry about decorum or tradition. They operate outside the normal cultural restraints shackled upon everyone else, and with this freedom, they prove vital for keeping rulers and tyrants in check with their use of humor, empathy, and truth. A jester's most important role, at the end of the day, is to humanize their ruler. For when a man has the power to unleash unfathomable amounts of pain and misery on the populace, a jester is needed to reveal who the real fool is.
