Irish people are all over the world but the most Irish place outside of Ireland is Newfoundland. A Canadian island in the most easterly point of North America. The connection between Ireland and here goes back centuries but the story of our connection has somewhat been lost in recent years Names, Faces, slang are all said to be the same as Ireland but I want to find out if that’s still true. That’s why I went all the way to Canada to find out what it’s really like In the most Irish place outside of Ireland. To understand the history of the Irish connection to Newfoundland we have to go back to the 17th century. It began because of fishing. Irish people would live on the island for one or two fishing seasons before returning in the autumn. But by 1840 most Irish immigrants settled permanently on the island and roughly half of the colony’s population was of Irish origin. Most of the Irish settlements were in places like St. Johns. Throughout my time in Newfoundland I met some locals and got a true perspective on the Irish connection to Newfoundland.
