India is Knocking Pakistan Out of Afghanistan, This Time Through Trade : India and Afghanistan are solidifying transport routes through Chabahar, with more multimodal ports to be developed, and establishing direct flight routes for airborne trade. Afghanistan’s Commerce Minister Nooruddin has said that Pakistan trade is unreliable, and called for more trade with India. Afghanistan has unveiled five-year tax breaks and free land to invest in mining, textiles, and pharma. It has also banned pharma imports from Pakistan. Trade is already growing— with Afghan fruits coming to India and varied Indian exports going to the landlocked country, bypassing Pakistan. The Chabahar port which is under a sanctions waiver from the US, has proved crucial, leaving Pakistan helpless. It is losing its grip on Afghanistan and reportedly shopping for new proxies there even as the border remains turbulent. But Kabul is strengthening its hand by leveraging India, and India’s ambition to reach Central Asia has gotten a boost. This is both a strategic and economic win for New Delhi.
