This in-depth documentary revisits the empire’s decline, the Young Turks’ revolt, the Balkan uprisings and the devastation of World War I before moving to the legendary Battle of Gallipoli, where Mustafa Kemal’s command changed the course of history. When the humiliating Treaty of Sèvres aimed to break Turkey apart, Ataturk refused to surrender. From the landing at Samsun to the Great Offensive of 1922, he led the Turkish War of Independence, reclaimed lost territories and forced the world to recognise modern Turkey through the Treaty of Lausanne. But victory brought transformation: the abolition of the Sultanate and the 1300-year-old Caliphate, and a series of hardline reforms — banning religious institutions, changing the alphabet, restricting traditional dress and establishing an uncompromising one-party rule. These decisions shook the entire Muslim world, sparked movements like the Khilafat agitation in India and created a century-long identity struggle within Turkey itself.
