About

Every year we see the American Cancer Society release its update on progress in cancer management, yet each year we see more people dying from this disease. This year they're estimating 618,000 deaths in the United States alone. That comes to about 1,700 deaths per day and about 70 deaths per hour from cancer. I'm Tom Seyfried, professor of biology at Boston College. I've been at BC since 1985. Before that I was at Yale working on epilepsy and glycolipid biochemistry. After decades in this field, I recognize that we must re-examine the fundamental questions that drive cancer research and cancer treatment. Why when so many billions of dollars are donated to cancer research are so many people dying each year? Why in the last 100 years has there been no significant progress in cancer survivorship? Come with us as we go to the core of these questions and examine the scientific theories foundational to developing the treatment used by oncology departments worldwide.

Over the last seven years, The Seyfried Lab at Boston College designed and carried out detailed experiments to determine which fuels cancer cells rely on for energy production. December 2024 marked the culmination of this study when the paper was published in ASN Neuro.
