Hi! Today I’m restoring a antique Napoleonic French infantry sword, model 1803. Its condition is decent. There’s no deep rust on the blade, but there are some corroded areas. One part is missing — the tip of the scabbard. Otherwise, the piece is in good shape. The scabbard is below average, but it can be restored. I started the restoration by spending about half an hour disassembling the handle. As you can see, this is a later modification, because the original handles were riveted, while this one uses a screw. I cleaned the blade using special cleaning agents, as well as natural materials like limestone. This mixture didn’t help much, so I had to lightly sand it with sandpaper. After cleaning, I used polishing paste and very fine sandpaper as the final step. Next, I worked on the handle. I used cleaning agents, soap, and soft brushes. After that, it looked good enough to start assembly. Before joining the blade and handle, I cut a special leather insert from medium-thickness leather, which goes between the handle and the scabbard mouth. After shaping it, I assembled the blade and moved on to restoring the scabbard. The next step was the scabbard. First, I brushed off the dust and dirt with a regular brush, then removed stains with a damp cloth. After that, I applied special soap and left it on for 12–15 hours so it would soak in and clean properly. Then I cleaned it again and started painting the scabbard. I reinforced some parts with leather glue. I made the scabbard tip from brass: cut it to the right shape, added all the details, shaped it, and attached it to the scabbard. Then I created an original leather strap, which was used to carry the saber on a belt. This took quite some time, and I used medium-thickness natural leather. Finally, I assembled the piece, ran a small test, and was happy to complete the project. It was an interesting job for me. Thanks for watching! Please like and share this video. Sincerely, Alex.
