After wrapping up the testing phase for Starship’s Block 2 hardware, SpaceX didn’t waste a moment before rolling out the very first Block 3 unit to Massey’s for testing. This brand-new prototype, known as Booster 18, is set to power Flight 12 early next year. But things took an unexpected turn during B18’s very first cryogenic test in the early hours of November 21. Cameras caught a sudden burst of gas; something inside the booster appeared to explode. In today’s Techmap episode, we’ll break down exactly what happened, explore the possible causes behind this anomaly, and discuss what it means for the future of the Starship program. At the time of testing, Booster 18 was undergoing a gas system pressure test — a crucial step before moving on to cryogenic fueling, full pressure verification, and ultimately, a static fire of all 33 upgraded Raptor engines. However, during this particular test, things didn’t go as planned. Fortunately, no Raptor engines were installed, and there was no propellant on board. The system was only pressurized using nitrogen and oxygen to evaluate the integrity of the tanks and the Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs). Sources have confirmed that B18 sustained serious damage: First – Liquid Oxygen Tank Rupture: The core of the incident was a ruptured Liquid Oxygen Tank. Second – Structural Damage: Although the damage was significant, it wasn’t as catastrophic as the explosion of the Starship upper stage S36 back in June, which devastated the Massey test site. This time, the destruction appears mostly confined to Booster 18 itself. Third – Post-Incident Status: Interestingly, B18 didn’t immediately topple over. It’s believed that the booster remained upright, supported by its new, much larger Liquid Methane Transfer Tube — a structure roughly the same size as a Falcon 9 booster. Given the extent of the damage, B18 has been officially scrapped.
