In this episode of our 8-day Switzerland route by panoramic trains, we wander Montreux’s 7 km lakefront—historic mansions, grand hotels, and gardens warmed by a microclimate where palms, magnolias, and figs thrive. We meet Freddie Mercury in bronze and trace Queen’s story here, including A Winter’s Tale, written while gazing at this very lake. We feel the shift into French-speaking Switzerland—wine over beer, steak over sausages—and watch locals commute by boat between Switzerland and France. Rolling east, we leave the Swiss Riviera for the Rhone Valley, Switzerland’s fruit basket and wine cellar. At Visp, we transfer to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn and climb 1,000 meters over 35 km through 15 tunnels and 30 bridges, the cogwheel biting into the track as the valley narrows and winter sunlight shrinks to just hours.
