Over the coming days, and desperate to avoid the brutal retribution that would surely follow, the Germans launched an all-or-nothing breakout attempt westwards in hopes of reaching the precarious safety of the western allies. Through 70 kilometers of dense woodlands and unmapped marshes they moved, all the time subjected to withering Soviet air and ground attacks in an area that became known as the Corridor of Death.
