This John Deere 9630 Axle Was Failing — Here’s How We Caught It in Time

What started as a simple axle seal leak turned into a major front axle bearing failure in progress on this John Deere 9630. The customer noticed oil leaking from the front axle and being slung all the way up to the windshield. Once the tractor arrived at the dealership, I checked the axle bearing end play and immediately knew something wasn’t right — it was way out of specification. After draining the axle, a large amount of metal and bearing material came out, confirming the axle bearings were failing and the tractor was on borrowed time. In this video, I walk through the entire repair process from start to finish, including removing the complete front axle from the tractor, tearing down the final drives, inspecting the damage, and reconditioning the axle with new bearings and seals. This repair is not a simple parts swap. It requires heavy lifting, extreme precision when setting bearing drag, and a deep understanding of bearing fitment and metallurgy. To properly install the bearings, the axle shaft had to be taken outside and frozen to shrink it, while the bearings were heated to over 300 degrees to achieve the correct press fit. Every step matters, and getting it wrong can lead to catastrophic failure.
