On the morning of September 1st, a sheriff's deputy was operating moving radar on Highway 441 in Florida when he saw a speeding Kia Sportage in the opposite lane of travel. The officer made a U-turn, clocked the SUV going 72MPH in a 50MPH zone, and pulled the driver over. Upon making contact with the driver, the officer informed the man of the reason for the stop, but the driver questioned the validity of the stop. After some discussion, the man presented the officer with his driver's license. While the officer went back to his patrol vehicle to run the license, he saw the man putting on gloves and watching him in his rearview mirror. Due to the man's earlier behavior and concern for officer safety, the deputy instructed the man to exit his vehicle. As the officer attempted to detain the man in handcuffs, he began to resist. He was charged with Resisting without Violence (Florida Statute § 843.02) and given a $1,000 bond. The officer also wrote him a $281 ticket for Unlawful Speed. The man would plead no contest to the charge and be assessed court costs and fines totaling $1,523.
