What Christmas Looks Like for Germans Living in England

We’re sharing how we celebrate a traditional German Christmas here in England. Our home is decorated with the Christmas pieces we grew up with in Germany: a Schwibbogen (candle arch), a wooden Christmas pyramid, nutcrackers, handmade wooden and glass ornaments, and our Advent wreath. We spent the weekend decorating our house the German way, cooking a chestnut soup, and making Marzipan-Kartoffeln from scratch. These traditions travelled with us from Germany to the UK, and they’re a big part of how we celebrate Christmas every year. Add the chestnuts and finally add the water. Let it simmer for 10-50 minutes and then blend. Add the heavy cream and finally season. Enjoy! _____ MARZIPAN POTATOES: Ingredients 250g ready to roll marzipan 50g icing sugar 1-2 tbsp cocoa power (for dusting) 1 tsp vanilla extract a pinch of cinnamon (mixed into cocoa powder) Method Knead the marzipan with the icing sugar and vanilla extract (we found out that it needs that) until smooth. Shape small 'potatoes'. Mix the cocoa powder with a pinch of cinnamon, then roll the marzipan pieces in it.
