In late 1943, Hitler faced a critical decision: should Germany abandon southern Italy or defend it? Every senior officer in the German high command, including Erwin Rommel, told Hitler to pull back to the northern Apennines. One man disagreed. Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, a Luftwaffe officer with no orthodox credentials for ground command, promised he could hold Italy south of Rome with fewer divisions than Rommel wanted for a retreat. Hitler chose Kesselring, and what followed was the most effective defensive campaign of the Second World War, a 607-day grinding battle across nine fortified lines that turned Churchill's promised "soft underbelly of Europe" into the longest dead end of the war.
