American snipers in World War Two were sent to fight with bolt-action Springfields fitted with cheap commercial hunting scopes. The Weaver 330C offered roughly two and a half times magnification, fogged in the rain, and fell apart under field conditions. No sniper school. No formal doctrine. No accuracy standards. Then they found the Gewehr 43. Semi-automatic. Ten-round detachable magazine. A four-power ZF4 scope with bullet drop compensation calibrated to eight hundred metres. Every rifle left the factory with an integral scope rail machined into the receiver. The Germans had not just built a better rifle. They had invented an entirely new concept: the squad-level designated marksman, decades before any Western army adopted the idea. So why didn't American snipers just use the captured German rifles? The answer involves ammunition that didn't fit, maintenance they couldn't perform, and a sound that would get them killed by their own side.
