Peter's primitive winter shelter is threatened by rain and he is forced to redesign and rebuild it, to prepare for the impending storm. His stone dry laid fireplace continues to function well, with little or no smoke inside his shelter. Winter survival requires a lot of effort foraging and hunting for food to maintain body strength, but also requires a significant amount of time and energy to acquire enough firewood. Wild edibles proved to be his largest source of sustenance. They included the inner bark of pine trees, hop hornbeam seeds, wild grapes, ghost apples and cattail roots. He does a taste test of the various teas he sampled during his stay. They included cedar, balsam fir, hemlock, white pine, chaga and juniper. The coyotes howl and a wind storm threatens his shelter.
