القناة الرسمية لتلفزيون السودان القومي أنشئ تلفزيون السودان عام 1962م في صدارة ما عرفت المنطقة العربية والأفريقية من محطات البث . كان ذلك بمبادرة من الوزير المختص بالإعلام وقتها ( وزير الاستعلامات والعمل , اللواء محمد طلعت فريد) فبدأ إرساله علي سبيل التجربة من سطح فندق المسرح القومى بام درمان فى 23 ديسمبر 1962 ، وانتدب الأستاذ/علي محمد شمو نائب مراقب الإذاعة لرئاسة لجنة تتولى مهام التعاون مع شركة طومسون وتم انشاء التلفزيون وعين اول مراقب عام له . . انطلق الإرسال التجريبي من جهاز صغير محدود القوة ( 100 وات ) , ووزعت أجهزة استقبال علي الميادين العامة بمناطق متفرقة من (العاصمة المثلثة) – الخرطوم التي انحصر عليها الإرسال . تم إعداد استديو للعمل ومقر للإدارة بمباني (فندق المسرح القومي) مقره الحالي) حيث جري الاحتفال الرسمي بالافتتاح في 17 نوفمبر 1963م بعد ان انتهى عقد طومسون وحلت محله حكومة المانيا الاتحادية التى تطوعت بانشاء تلفزيون السودان .
