This 4K journey takes you through four major railway segments: the electrified ÖBB Westbahn, the Wels–Passau Passauer Bahn, the rural Innkreisbahn, and finally the DB-operated Munich–Simbach (via Mühldorf) line (ÖBB-Westbahn - ÖBB-Passauer Bahn - ÖBB-Innkreisbahn - DB-München-Simbacher Bahn). The ride begins on the Westbahn, Austria's electrified mainline connecting Vienna to western hubs. Departing Linz, the train glides swiftly to Wels at speeds up to 160 km/h across double-track, high-capacity infrastructure. At Wels, we transfer onto the Passauer Bahn, another ÖBB double-track, electrified line continuing northwest toward Neumarkt-Kallham and beyond to Passau and Germany. From Neumarkt-Kallham, our route continues along the Innkreisbahn, a single-track, non-electrified line traversing the Innviertel region. Despite its quaint rural character, it remains a key connection between Upper Austria and Bavaria, and serves as the shortest historical route between Vienna and Munich—famously traveled by the Orient Express in the late 1800s. The line is scheduled for electrification by 2029. As we approach Braunau am Inn, we cross into Germany and continue our descent on the Munich–Simbach line. Operated by DB, this segment is partially electrified—the section beyond Markt Schwaben remains single track and serves both regional and freight traffic. Speeds reach up to 140 km/h, and the line has a rich history dating back to the 1870s. Cross-border fluidity is made possible through mixed-gauge operations and seamless infrastructure. Mühldorf station stands as a major regional junction—serving around 10,000 travelers daily—with seven platforms linking local, freight, and long-distance services.
