Instead, they were driven into the woods, lined up at the edge of prepared pits, and shot in secrecy. Between 1939 and 1941, nearly 1,700 people were executed in this way. Palmiry became one of the most notorious killing sites in occupied Poland, a place where Nazi occupation policy revealed its true purpose: the destruction of the Polish leadership class and the silencing of any potential resistance. The victims represented every sphere of cultural, political, and social life — a deliberate attempt to empty the nation of those who could lead, inspire, or organize.
