Come join us for nightlife in Tokyo, Japan as we visit the vibrant area of Shinjuku (新宿区) where you find a plethora of tall buildings, neon lights, restaurants, bars, karaoke rooms, arcades and more! Our night kicked off with us just wandering around the busiest sections of Shinjuku marvelling at all the lights, crowds and action. We spotted the Robot Restaurant which is one of the more popular tourist attractions in Tokyo especially for tourists. Although we didn't go there we wandered around further until we hit up Golden Gai - a section of small alleys with Izakaya (small bar/restaurant). It would have been fun to have a drink there but we couldn't film so we ended up finding a more rowdy place a few streets over where we drank beer and ate Takoyaki. After the food and drinks we decided to go check out an arcade where drumming and Mario Kart consumed our attention for a while. Our stop for nightlife in Tokyo was at a karaoke where we enjoyed singing and didn't enjoy the two worst adult beverages of our lives. Overall it was a great evening of nightlife in Tokyo and we especially enjoyed getting to see Shinjuku at night having spent quite a bit of time in that area by day. 🌃 Tokyo Nightlife in Shinjuku: Izakaya, Takoyaki, Arcades & Karaoke! 🍺🎤✨【Ultimate Guide】 🌙 Night Begins: Welcome to Shinjuku! Known for its vibrant nightlife, neon lights, bustling crowds, bars, clubs, and non-stop energy, Shinjuku is where Tokyo truly comes alive after dark. Flashing lights illuminate the night, music fills the air, and the energy is contagious. We notice a wild mix of people: young locals, international visitors, and groups of businessmen just off work, all ready to blow off steam. Bouncers call out, trying to lure people into bars and restaurants. The sensory overload is real—and we love it! 🤖 The Famous Robot Restaurant No Shinjuku nightlife video is complete without a nod to the Robot Restaurant—one of Tokyo’s most bizarre and iconic attractions. For around 8,000 Yen (about $80 USD), you get a dazzling robot and laser show (no meal included). It’s weird, wild, and uniquely Tokyo, with multiple nightly shows. If you’re up for a splurge, put it on your list! 🍸 Exploring Kabukicho: Tokyo’s Red Light District We make our way to Kabukicho Sakura-Dori, Tokyo’s legendary red-light and entertainment district. Despite its rowdy reputation, the area is packed with every kind of nightlife: bars, nightclubs, hostess clubs, and more. The name “Kabukicho” comes from plans to build a kabuki theatre here in the 1940s—a theatre that never materialized, but the name stuck. The party vibes and crowds build as the night goes on. 🍶 Discovering Golden Gai: Tiny Bars, Big Atmosphere Next, we wander into Golden Gai (新宿ゴールデン街), a famous cluster of narrow alleys crammed with tiny, themed izakayas. Each bar is intimate—sometimes just 5 seats! Some are “foreigner-friendly,” others not, and photography is discouraged to preserve the cozy ambiance. We admire the quirky spots but decide not to drink here due to cover charges (about 500 Yen per person) and pricey drinks. Still, it’s a must-visit for any Tokyo nightlife explorer! 🍻 Izakaya Time: Beers & DIY Takoyaki We settle into a lively izakaya elsewhere, greeted by a rowdy crowd and a free table—finally! Drinks: Ice-cold beers (Kanpai! 🍺) Snacks: Free cabbage with dipping sauce and—surprise!—DIY Takoyaki (たこ焼き), Osaka’s famous octopus balls. Experience: We get hands-on, making our own Takoyaki with a little help. The result: piping hot, extra-greasy, crispy outside, gooey inside. Some pieces are slightly undercooked but delicious! Bill: 1,823 Yen (about $18 USD), including a modest cover charge (around 240 Yen per person), much less than Golden Gai. 🕹️ Tokyo Arcades: Drums & Mario Kart Fun No Tokyo night is complete without a trip to an arcade. Games Played: We battle it out on a Japanese drum game and relive childhood with a round of Mario Kart. Atmosphere: The arcades are loud, busy, and full of nostalgia. Sam even clinches first place in Mario Kart! Pure Tokyo fun. 🎤 Karaoke Night: The Ultimate Japanese Experience After checking out a few packed spots, we finally find a karaoke box with availability and a reasonable price (plus a 20-minute wait). The Process: Booking is a challenge (tip: look for the English button on the machine!). Drinks: Unfortunately, the included wine and gin & tonic are the worst we’ve ever tasted. Singing: Still, we belt out songs (even some 2Pac!) and have a blast, even if the drinks are best left untouched. Karaoke is a must in Japan, but we recommend skipping the bar package.
