Let’s explore the depths of it in the video. Robert paces the floor nervously, rubbing his temples as he’s tempted to take another swig of his wine. But for once, he tries to restrain himself as he instead thinks about the situation he is in. In the other room, Cersei is brooding and likely cursing his name for what Joffrey had done. The brat had opened up a cat's belly to peek and see the unborn kittens. Robert had ended up knocking out his baby teeth to discipline him. Cersei threatened to kill him if he ever laid a hand on the boy again, and Robert believed his wife was mad enough to follow through with that. Still, he was hardly going to sit by and allow this to happen again. He hasn’t forgotten about Aerys II burning people for his own amusement. How long would it be until the boy starts taking things a step further? No, Joffrey must be disciplined, and while he would do it himself, he knows that would be impossible. If he ever acts out again, he knows that he can just come running back to his mother and hide under her skirts. He would need to do it in a way that Cersei can’t interfere, but how? The thought starts to give Robert a headache as he tries to clear his head. He begins looking through some of the documents on his desk, and at the top of them is a letter from Ned Stark. His old friend talks about the status of the realm, grain harvests, the state of the Wall, and border disputes between the Boltons and Manderlys. All of that leaves the king groaning from boredom as he gets enough of this from court. But as he looks further down, he sees mentions of his son. Though he has not yet seen Robb, Ned loves to speak about his eldest at length. He speaks of how Robb shows great promise with the lance and sword, how he studies military texts as Robert did, and how he grows taller and stronger each day. For a moment, Robert is lost in those thoughts, the idea of having a son like that. And then, the thought comes to him. He grabs a fresh quill and parchment and begins writing to his friend, asking him whether or not Joffrey can be fostered in Winterfell. He does not delve into the details, but explains that he has observed Joffrey displaying troubling behavior and wishes for him to be sent there, where it might be a better environment away from the court. As he finishes writing it, he calls Joffrey over. The boy is fearfully rubbing his cheek, which carries a bruise. For a moment, Robert feels a pang of pity for the boy and wonders whether he is being too hard on him. But as he looks at his son's eyes, he can see a flicker of madness in the ten-year-old's gaze and quickly squashes that sympathy. Robert straightens and looks down on him. Robert: Joffrey, you have been acting out too much. I think you are becoming spoiled here. You have no regard for your actions or their consequences, and you think without ever seeing how it affects anyone else. That is unbecoming of my son, much less a Prince of the Seven Kingdoms. Joffrey: I’m sorry, Father. Please, I won’t do it again. I promise I’ll be good. Robert: Oh, spare me the performance, boy. I am not here to watch your little song and dance; I am here to tell you what will happen next. Clearly, you are much too coddled here if you think you can act like this without consequences. That is why I am sending you North to your Uncle Eddard. He shall foster you for the time being. He will see to it that you learn responsibility. Joffrey: Father! How could you do that to me? You can’t do that. I won’t go. Robert: This matter is not up for debate, Joffrey. I am sending you there. All I require is Ned Stark's approval, and then you will be taking the first ship to White Harbor. Joffrey: If you wish to send me away, send me to Storm’s End or Casterly Rock with my grandfather. There is at least something to do there. Robert: This is not some vacation for you to enjoy, boy. This is to teach you. Joffrey: Teach me? What can I learn amongst the snow and savages there? Robert: Enough! I will not hear any more of this, but you had best watch how you speak about Lord Stark and the Northmen. They are as loyal as any many can hope, and Eddard Stark is the only reason I am sitting on the Iron Throne. His loyalty has allowed me to win the war.
