Even as Arya finds Septa Mordane and reluctantly relays the orders her father gave them, Sansa is hardly paying attention at all. Her throat feels tight, and her hands are clammy as they grip idly at the frills of her gown. She steals a glance at Arya and Septa Mordane, who had begun packing their belongings while Sansa stood still, feeling paralyzed. How could Arya be so calm, when this dream was crumbling down all around them? She was supposed to be a Queen, living in the beautiful capital with her Golden Prince. Instead, she was going home, to the cold North and Winterfell. The thought of home should have comforted her. Instead, she thought of the dreams she’d had of her life to be in King’s landing, and of the glorious golden Prince she had sworn to love with all of her heart. Joffrey’s smile, his golden curls, and the way he had once bowed in front of her before the entire court. She told herself that he was nothing at all like King Robert. He was gentler, more refined, more handsome, more- Sansa’s thoughts falter. A memory breaks through to the forefront of her mind, like falling through into ice-cold water: Joffrey, on the banks of the Trident, a blade in his hand as he sneers and slashes at Arya. She tries to tell herself that wasn’t the real Joffrey. She desperately holds on to the vision of the sweet boy she wants the Prince to be. But, another memory follows, sharp and unrelenting in its truth. The butcher’s boy, Mycah, cut down by Sandor Clegane’s greatsword. The look of horror on Arya’s face. And Lady, her beautiful and loyal direwolf, executed in Nymeria’s place. Sansa’s stomach turns. She presses her lips together, fighting back tears. She wants so badly to run to the queen, to beg her to let her stay, to cling to the dream she has chased since she first heard the songs of knights and maidens. But Joffrey laughed as Mycah bled. And the queen ordered Lady’s death without a flicker of mercy in her eyes. Her father’s words finally return to her, heavy and final. As Sansa resigns herself to leaving King’s Landing, Arya suddenly stops packing to glare back at her. Arya (impatient): “Hurry up! Are you just going to stand there all day while Septa Mordane and I pack for you? Just throw a few things in and let’s go. If I can give up my dancing lessons, then you can give up a few of your stupid dresses” Sansa (snapping out of her thoughts): “If you can find room for your stupid sword, then I can find room for my gowns! And I-I was just thinking…About Joffrey.” Arya: "You still don’t get it, do you? Joffrey had Mycah killed, and he laughed while it happened. He made them kill Lady, and you stood there wishing he’d smile at you again. He’ll never care about you, Sansa. He only cares about himself." Sansa: "Do you think I don’t remember? I hear Lady’s cry every night, and I see that butcher boy’s face when I close my eyes. I wanted to believe Joffrey was different, that he was better, because if he wasn’t… then all of it was for nothing. Every smile, every word, every dream I had of being his queen. Do you know what it feels like to see your whole life crumble in front of you?" Arya: "Then stop clinging to lies. Father’s right: we have to go. You can’t change what Joffrey is, and no silk or song will make him love you…. But we’re Starks, and we still have our pack.” Sansa: "I know. I just… I wanted things to be different. But I’ll come. I’ll do as Father asks." As Sansa joins the packing, Septa Mordane gives the girls an approving look. She is grateful that the two can finally act like proper sisters, especially at a dire time like this. Arya pulls Needle from its hiding place, testing the weight in her hand like she’s preparing to go to war. A knock at the door causes both girls to jump. Arya has needle in hand, ready to fight if she needs to. The door opens, revealing the Stark guard Alyn with a dozen other men in tow, their faces grim. Alyn: “My ladies. Lord Eddard commanded me to see you all to safety. There’s a ship waiting for us at the docks, but we must move swiftly.” Arya lowers her blade and grins with relief.
