And although we thought our baby might already be here by now, this little one still seems perfectly happy staying put a little longer. To get ready for the colder months, Philippe starts by cleaning the space between the house and the two small structures behind it: the old bread oven and the little barn we turned into a woodshed earlier this year. He clears the area to make it easier to maintain throughout winter and to help redirect rainwater that flows down from the road above. He then places concrete slabs to create a dry path so we don’t have to walk through the mud every time we fetch wood for the fire. The yard also gets some attention as Philippe pulls out old tree trunks, levels soil piles, and helps prepare the outdoor spaces for the winter season. Philippe also finishes the trench for the water supply going to the vegetable garden, installs the pipe, and closes it all up. Finally, he turns back to the driveway, filling divots with stones where needed before compacting the surface. The driveway is now mud free for this winter. Speaking of winterizing, we head to the vegetable garden together and harvest the very last of the tomatoes, eggplants, courgettes, peppers and even the corn.
