My Favorite Cheesesteak Sandwich (No Rules, Just Flavor!)

In this video, I’m making a cheesesteak sandwich the way I like it—no comparisons, no rules, just a really good sandwich. Thin-sliced steak is cooked with onions and green peppers, piled onto crusty toasted buns, and topped with melty provolone cheese. I’m also sharing a simple homemade au jus that’s rich, savory, and perfect for dipping. This is an easy, satisfying sandwich you can make at home anytime you’re craving comfort food. Ingredients • Thin-sliced New York strip or ribeye steak (I use the Shabu Shabu pre-cut steak from Costco and slice it again crosswise into strips) • Crusty submarine-style buns • Green bell pepper, chopped or sliced • Yellow onion, chopped or sliced • Olive oil • Salt, to taste • Black pepper, to taste • Garlic powder, to taste • Onion powder, to taste • Provolone cheese slices • Worcestershire sauce, to taste Instructions 1. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. 2. Add the chopped or sliced onion and green pepper. Cook until soft and translucent. 3. Add the sliced steak to the pan and cook until tender, seasoning with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder as desired. 4. Lightly splash Worcestershire sauce into the steak and vegetable mixture and stir to combine. 5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). 6. Slice the crusty submarine buns and toast them in the oven until lightly golden. 7. Spoon the steak and vegetable mixture onto the toasted buns and top with provolone cheese slices. 8. Return the sandwiches to the oven just long enough to melt the cheese. • You can also broil for a few minutes to melt the cheese and lightly brown the top. 9. Serve hot, with au jus on the side for dipping. ⸻ Homemade Au Jus Recipe Ingredients • 3 cups cold water • A few tablespoons of red wine (optional) • 3 tablespoons beef base (I used Better Than Bouillon beef base) • ½ teaspoon garlic powder • ½ teaspoon onion powder • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 2 teaspoons dark balsamic vinegar • ½ teaspoon black pepper • 1 teaspoon cornstarch • 1 tablespoon butter Instructions 1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water to a boil. 2. Reduce heat to medium-low and whisk in the beef base, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, and black pepper. 3. In a measuring cup, whisk together ¼ cup cold water with the cornstarch until smooth. 4. Add the cornstarch mixture to the simmering broth and whisk well. 5. Increase heat to medium-high and cook until slightly thickened. 6. Add the butter and whisk until melted and fully incorporated. 7. Serve hot alongside the cheesesteak sandwiches.
