Cop Testifies About Breaching Uvalde Classroom Door To Kill Gunman

Zavala County Sheriff's Office Deputy Joe Vasquez was off duty when he responded to a report of an active shooter at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022. Upon arrival, he linked up with other officers and entered the school. Inside, he encountered chaos and shooting, eventually finding the shooter and engaging him. After the shooter was killed, he searched for his daughter, Ava, a student at the school who was safe at the Civic Center. 06:06 "I think it was a school officer coming out. I think it was Mike Hernandez. He has something in his hand. He's walking away. And ask him where the shooter's at. And same thing, he looks kind of confused." 07:52 "So when you found out that he was shooting, did that stop you from going forward?" "No, I just ran quicker." 08:39 "They're telling me which classroom they think the shooter's at. I remember him describing the chair. They point. They're like, where the chair is at. At some point, I asked if they want to make entry, and they're no. They say something about a negotiator and a shield." 10:13 "I thought they were going to have some kind of equipment to breach the door, which they didn't. I remember asking about a sledgehammer." 11:24 "I know i ended up leaving to you to make a call. I was still trying to find out where Ava was, if she was okay." 14:32 "And so tell us how you breached the door," Prosecutor Bill Turner says 15:38 "You thought he was going to be where the bodies were?" "Yes." "So that's where you focused your attention?" "Yes, but it was hard to see it was. it was dark. And then the door. You hear a door creak open in front. And then the shooting starts." 16:43 "I could hear the shots coming. I'm carrying my rifle left handed so I can't even pick it up because we're so close together. Eventually, I transitioned to the right fire couple rounds and it jams." 17:09 "Eventually, shooting happens behind me, and then it's over, and in front of me there's someone with long hair face down. And I think it's a I thought it was a teacher this at first because he had long hair. They flip him over, and I could tell it was the shooter. He's in all black." 18:33 "Now I'm not getting responses, but I have a gas mask on. I don't know if he answered me or not, but right after seeing hers, when all the chaos in there started, the desks being pushed everywhere, screaming, I got out of there. At that point, once they flooded the classroom, I left to look for my daughter." 21:12 "Yeah, I get off on the highway and I run, get to the kids, look through them, Ava's not there. They're in somebody's front yard. There's a lady at the door. I asked to use her phone, same thing, no answer. So I don't know where he was at. The bus ends up getting there. We get on the bus, go to the civic center. Get off, walk in there, and the kids are in rows, almost like a formation, and I don't see her. At first, it feels everything leaves in my body, and then out of nowhere, she like appears, and I hug her.
