Jury Sees Uvalde School Cop's Interview About Not Stopping Gunman Who Killed 21

Jurors in former Uvalde, Texas, school police officer Adrian Gonzales' child endangerment trial saw his May 2022 interview with a Texas ranger after a gunman murdered 21 children and two teachers inside Robb Elementary School. The interview with Texas Ranger Ricardo Guajardo occurred one day after the massacre. Gonzales was patrolling a park when he received a call about an accident and a shooter running toward the school. Gonzales and other officers responded, entering the school through various doors. They faced gunfire, with Gonzales noting 7-9 rounds inside and 13-14 outside. Officers removed students from the school through broken windows, with no injuries reported among them. Gonzales also mentioned the Raptor system for school alerts and the lack of a permanent officer at Robb Elementary. Prosecutor Bill Turner played video of Gonzales' May 25, 2022, interview with Guajardo, a ranger with the Texas Department of Public Safety, during Guajardo's testimony today. He paused the video periodically to ask Guajardo questions. 05:40 "So going back to yesterday, can you walk me through just basically your entire work day from the time you checked on what you did?" 10:31 "I go, 'Who's over there?' He goes, 'He's over there. The shooter. He's wearing black. He's wearing black.' I go, 'Where?' So when I turn actually, my vehicle's still there at the school." 11:04 "I said, 'Hey, shots fired. Shots fired at Robb school.' And then I tell him, you know the general location where he's at. So I started moving up ... try to get from front of my vehicle to the back. There was only thing that was a tree, and then the building. So I started walking towards there. And then I see an officer, one of the PD officers coming, and then all of a sudden I see, like, glass coming out and firing, you know, somebody firing in glass. 14:12 "So you, you drove up to her, she's pointing this way. And when you're talking to her, that's when you start hearing..." 17:57 "When these gunshots are going off inside the where exactly are you inside the building?" Guajardo asks "I want to say I want to be by the first classroom right here," Gonzales answers 19:49 "Whenever something like that happens, there's a threat on school, they go on a lockdown. Doors are supposed to be locked." 24:01 "And there was a trooper, a female trooper, that was with them, and I told him to stay where they're at because glass, you know, they're shooting out the window." 26:33 "I went and checked on Officer Ruben Ruiz, because he told us that his wife called him, Ms. Mireles, and that she, she was hit, and she, she was dying." "You went to go check on, check on him?" Guajardo asks "He was sitting in there with lieutenant. I was trying to, you know, calm him down." 27:09 "He wanted to go in ... after after he received that phone call, so they actually had to take his gun away and sit him down." 28:34 "broke that window, and then we pull kids out of there..." 31:09 "How long were you there with Ruben?" Guajardo asks "10 minutes, maybe just assessing, just making sure he was okay. Because he was like, she's in there." 37:48 "I gave a tourniquet to one of the EMTs... and we're grabbing as many as we can." 39:01 "She never gave me a description. She just said he was wearing all black." 40:48 "I want to ask you about is the statement you just made that I never went in until I got coverage," Turner says 41:22 "So coverage means other officers covering for you?" Turner asks "Yes," Guajardo answers "And he didn't, he didn't say west door. Is that correct? He just said coverage?" Turner asks "Yes, that's correct," Guajardo answers 43:05 "And then you're telling us that if, as you're standing there, you're hearing more gunfire?" Guajardo asks in the 2022 interview "No, the gunfire is over," Gonzales answers 47:04 " That's our concern. Do we fire and, you know, do kids get hit? You know?" Gonzales says 56:39 "Kids were getting evacuated." 01:01:05 "Now that I can sit back, I went tunnel vision, like I said, with the lady that was running, like I said, they said she was there were running to the school, and that's, that's where I saw and that was my mistake, but it's just the adrenaline rush going and, you know, shots fired and stuff like that. So it was just, you know, because on the radio said there was a lady shot in the head on Dia Street, which is two blocks down, but I didn't know that the relationship on that."
